Outreach Ministry

Missions Outreach at HUMC

At Hockessin UMC, we believe we are called to reach out to others, both to share the good news of Christ and to help others in need.  Our Missions Outreach aims to help those most in need by providing both material and spiritual sustenance, allowing for hope in their lives that may lead to faith and the joy of knowing Jesus Christ.

Our Missions Outreach is Based in Scripture…

“For whatsoever you do to the least of your brothers and sisters, you do unto me,” says the Lord Jesus. Matthew 25:40

…and in Wesleyan Tradition:

John Wesley said, “Do all the good you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can.”

Missions Outreach

Each summer a team of teens and adult volunteers travels from HUMC to Central Appalachia to share the love of Jesus by carrying out home repairs and other building projects.

Located in center city Wilmington, Emmanuel Dining Room provides daily hot lunches to needy adults and children. Hockessin Church provides the daily hot meal once each month. Our volunteers prepare the main course and provide desserts (baked or store-bought) for that meal.

Christmas can be difficult for many – even moreso for children whose parents are incarcerated. Hockessin Church is blessed to be able to afford incarcerated parents a way to give to their children.

Each year during the Christmas season, Hockessin Church members select the names of children whose parents are in prison from the “Angel Tree” at church. Members purchase gifts that have been requested for each child. Volunteers then bring the purchased gifts to be distributed at the Angel Tree Ministry’s festive Christmas party. The faces on the children and families are priceless!

The mission of Urban Promise is to teach children and young adults the skills necessary for spiritual growth, academic achievement, life management, and Christian leadership. Hockessin Church members volunteer in a variety of ways to support this ministry, including construction and repairs carried out by the Methodist Men.

Each week Hockessin UMC members read aloud to toddlers and pre-school children from low-income families at 2 area sites.

Hockessin Church members regularly contribute non-perishable food to the Sunday Breakfast Mission Food Warehouse.  During special outreach programs, our generous members also contribute multiple frozen turkeys and complimentary non-perishable “fixins” to the SBM’s “The Great Thanksgiving Food Outreach and Banquet” which are then distributed to low-to-moderate income families, youth, adults, and senior citizens. We also participate in the Christmas food drive which runs similarly to the Thanksgiving drive.

Good Neighbors Inc. provides home repairs and financial guidance to homeowners who lack the physical or financial means to make necessary home repairs. As neighbors who care, Hockessin Church members who have construction and repair skills share hope with homeowners.
